Thoughts on Conferencing, the Dissemination of Information, and the False Appearance of Interconnectivity
August 3rd, 2010 by aleyajobsonBlogs, inboxes, social bookmarks, search engines, Youtube channels: it seems as though there are so many means of archiving information available that it would be more than mere folly to leave it unused but actually backward. Thus live shared experiences like conferences are increasingly archived and left for public perusal – transforming the live experience into more than just a period of interaction but also the creation of a library in real-time. Aside from putting a bit more pressure on speakers, it also puts our ideas into perspective and makes each uttered word that much more valuable – because it isn’t just being shared with physically present peers but also an invisible audience of incalculable amount.
Featured Project: Employee of the Day
August 1st, 2010 by aleyajobsonIf you have been to the Hub recently you might have seen these words hanging around on the walls, waiting for you to check them out:
Hi everybody!
Alex Cullen contacted me to participate in an art exhibition at the Hub around mid-August. Together with other artists, we decided to choose the topic of “enterprise”, which could bring in an interesting and suitable dialogue in The Hub. For my part of the work, I’m working on the notion of “the employee of the month”. For that purpose, and for those of you who would like to participate, I would need your picture, your name and your birth date. I will also ask to other fellow members to tell me 3 features about yourself, that could make you the employee of the day.
I will come to The Hub every day, and choose the employee of the day. By the end of the exhibition, all the portraits will occupy the wall… I will make an edition of each drawing that will be offered to those of you who participated, and the originals will be sold at 60€/unit.
Thanks for participating!
If you need more information, please contact me in: emilie.maidon@gmail.com
In order to investigate the project further, we asked Emilie for a sit-down and discussed her motivations.
Why The Hub?
Alex Cullen (Hub Host) got in touch with her after seeing an exhibition in a cafe in Brussels where she had made paintings of the place while people sat at the bar. Alex talked about an exhibition in The Hub based on the same concept: drawing people while working and talking in The Hub. However, from that first meeting, the exhibition concept has developed differently and has ended up being a collective exhibition where 3 artists, Emilie, Nicolas and Valentine; all of whom are working on artworks around the topic of ” enterprise”
What’s the main motivation?
The exhibition topic enterprise came out of several visits to The Hub, feeling that it was a “different office”, and brought up ideas very much related to the usual idea of capitalist enterprise that exists in peoples’ minds.

Martin Ophoven is the mind behind Théâtre Carbonique. Comedian and playwright with start in Communications, Martin wanted to find a means of communicating his ideals. Using his own talents as a starting point and with the encouragement of a Technical Carbon-Footprint Advisor who had had the same questions about the role of the individual in bringing a change to the world, he wrote a play based on the corporate and social responsibilities of companies. It is a humourous, thought-provoking and unconventional approach to discussing the issue of social responsibility.
He came to the Hub to be in contact with consultants who might want to implement his tool in order to affect large numbers. Furthermore he finds that the Hub reflects his ideals in terms of showing a system that accepts all perspectives in order to work towards a better world, a system in which everyone’s talents and competencies work together to form a new image of the world.
To Martin, if we are blind and deaf to the individual and his/her ideas, then we end up collectively blind and deaf. He wants to encourage group learning and collective growth in which no one is left behind. His part in this collective change is to utilize living communication rather than static in order to provoke thought, reactions and, eventually, change.
Martin’s invitation to the next showing:

Caroline Grégoire grew up in Burundi and came to Belgium for her studies. From the very beginning she wanted to be independent and control her own professional activities and she also wanted to work in a field that could be useful to the world. Thus she works as a freelance consultant in environment and as of late, sustainable development.
